From Lived Experience to Leadership

Free | National Care Experienced People Month | Online interactive workshop | 2.5 hours | Tue 24th Nov, rolling sessions 10.00 am – 12.30 pm and 6 pm-8.30pm (Please note, this is the same session ran twice, you do not need to attend both)

What does it mean to lead from lived experience?

Leadership doesn’t begin with a job title or being given a position of responsibility. It can begin with understanding who you are, what matters to you and how you want to show up in the world.

This free, interactive workshop explores lived experience leadership and self-leadership — recognising the knowledge, values, strengths and expertise we develop through our experiences, and how these can shape the way we lead ourselves, influence others and contribute to change.

We’ll explore what leadership can look like beyond traditional ideas of being “in charge”, while creating space to think about your own values, the kind of leader you want to be and how lived experience can sit alongside professional, academic and other forms of knowledge.

What we’ll explore

During the workshop, we’ll think about:

  • What we mean by lived experience leadership
  • Self-leadership and why leadership starts with ourselves
  • Identifying the values that matter to you
  • What it means to make choices and act in ways that align with those values
  • Recognising the knowledge, strengths and skills developed through your experiences
  • Different ways and styles of leading
  • Lived experience alongside professional, academic and other forms of knowledge and expertise
  • Power, influence and whose expertise gets recognised
  • Staying connected to your values when working within systems and organisations
  • Using your knowledge, values and influence to challenge, shape and create change

There will be opportunities for discussion, reflection and activities throughout the workshop, with different ways to take part.

Who is it for?

This workshop is for care-experienced people of any age who are curious about leadership, personal development, influence or creating change.

You don’t need to hold a leadership position, have a particular qualification or already think of yourself as a leader.

You might already be involved in participation, research, campaigning, advisory work or decision-making or you might simply want some space to think about your values, strengths and the kind of person or leader you want to be.

Leadership starts with you

Leadership isn’t only about leading other people.

Self-leadership is about developing an understanding of yourself, your values, strengths, boundaries and the things that matter to you and using that understanding to guide the choices you make and how you respond to the world around you.

For care-experienced people, our experiences may be part of what has shaped our values, knowledge and perspectives. But they don’t have to define who we are or the kind of leader we become.

This workshop is an opportunity to recognise what you already bring, explore what leading in a way that feels true to your values could look like, and think about how you might use that to influence the people, spaces and systems around you.

The workshop will not be recorded.
